Adios and Happy Trails....
Somewhere late last century, a drunken post-ride conversation turned to "well, there's no good place to find trail info in this town so you just gotta ride it...." Taking on that challenge, the AustinBike world headquarters was created and the site was born.
Over the years, we grew up with Austin, adding more info, branching out into other spots in the US, and even internationally - wherever I happened to be riding. Lots of content was created, and people used the site as their Austin mountain biking destination guide as we had the best info on trails.
But a lot has changed in the last 25 years. Primarily, the internet grew up.
Now, with tools like Strava, MTB Project, and Trailforks, there is a ton of content out there. Creating and maintaining information about Austin mountain biking has slowed for me and so, it's time to pack it up, it's time for a new adventure. We'll be heading for our next adventure, a place where I might stop mid-ride to check out the ocean views.
I will miss the Austin trails, but not as much as I will miss the friends that I've made over the years here. I may swing back from time to time and I'll always pack riding clothes. One of you unlucky souls will need to loan me a bike for a greenbelt tour.
Feel free to drop me a line at John at austinbike dot com, the domain will be around for a little bit after the site goes away at the end of 2025. I feel that riding off into the sunset is better than trying to figure out how to keep this thing going. I'll join the ranks of icons like La Zona Rosa, Shady Grove, and all the other things that made Austin such a special place during our time here.

South Boundary Trail, Taos, NM
The South Boundary Trail is a classic that stretches from just outside of Angel Fire, back down to Taos, NM. It's a long trail and you'll want to grab a shuttle to the top. After about an hour in the van you're itching to get on those trails. Despite being at altitude when you are dropped off, expect some climbing as you traverse the route back to Taos.

Monarch Crest, CO
This is one of this epic trails that everyone needs to do once in their lives. You'll want to get a shuttle to take you up to the top and despite the fact that you start at a pretty decent elevation level, there is still plenty of climbing that you will do before you begin all of the descending. The good news is that there is a brewery on the way down so you do not need to wait until you get all the way home to have that beer.

Arkansas Hills Trails, Salida, CO
Salida, Colorado is a great bike town, there are trails to be had right off the main downtown area. We dropped into a bike shop, picked up some supplies and headed right to the hills from there. Later in the trip we had a friend shuttle us to the far north end and we did the trek all the way back into town.
